Bald Head Island visit

23rd November 2013
Just a few weeks ago we had he chance to take a day trip to a very scenic location not far from Wilmington. Our destination for this day trip was Bald Head Island. Getting there can be half the fun as you can take a ferry from Ft. Fisher on the tip of Pleasure Island, then go straight to the Bald Head Island ferry just about a mile or so from the state run Ft. Fisher ferry. The Bald Head Island ferry is a short ride from it's mainland location just outside of Southport North Carolina. What makes Bald Head Island special is the fact no cars are allowed. You can either rent a bike, or for the very lazy (like myself) you can rent a golf cart for the day or for a few hours. If you are really up to it, then you can walk anywhere for free!

Most of the island is being retained as a nature preserve. The only development is along the ocean front, and the south side of the island. The ferry ride takes about 25 minutes, and you arrive at the modern terminal with a few shops, and eateries within a short stroll. One of the main attractions on the island is "Old Baldy" The lighthouse not far from the ferry docks. For a small admission fee you can walk the grounds, and tour the lighthouse. Not the tallest, but still a bit of a challenge to make it to the top. Once you get to the top soak in the view of all the surrounding areas. Oak Island, Southport, the cape fear river, and of course Bald Head Island.

I have added several shots of the lighthouse on my site. But just in case you can't find them I have posted a shot here.
